Blog post 3- Hills Like White Elephants

"Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, was my favorite piece of writing that we read in class this semester. I love how Hemingway created a story from mostly dialouge. I know it must of been exteremly difficult to pull that off. But anyways, enough complementing, lets talk about what the story was about,
Being pregnant is a blessing isn't it? Well it all depends on the timing I guess. Jig and a man with no name found out that they were having a baby. Throughout the entire story the man is basically Jig to get an abortion in a very settle, very calm way. He tries to make it seem like it is just naming all of the options but  it's very clear that he is leaning toward abortion. He brings up the fact that they would no longer be able to do all of the things that they would normally do, like trying new drinks and going to hotel and doing whatever it is that they do there. He still wants to be a free ma, not have to worry about a child, basically hes selfish.
Jig on the other hand wanted to keep her baby, whenever this mysterious man gives her a reason to get rid of it she throws a response back as to why she wants to keep it. This was very hard to read. Its always hard when someone is telling you to do the opposite of what to do and I know its especially hard if the topic is killing your baby. After all its something that can never be undone, even if you were to have another child the thought will still remain in the back of your mind.
Ultimatley, in the end she decided to side with the man and says that she will get an abortion even though you can tell at she doesn't want to. She lies and says shes fine but I think deep down inside no women is "fine" with getting an abortion

A Boy Called It

This is a very heartbreaking story about a boy who once had a loving family, but for some reason something changed for the bad. He's father left his mother and 2 younger brothers with their mom and she becomes a bitter lady that treats her oldest son terribly. She barley feeds him and when she does its the scraps from his brother leftovers. She beats him and leaves bruises, and when the teachers and nurses ask him why what happened to him, he is told to lie. This has happened so often that the nurse began to catch on and called the police on his mother; he feels bad that he has revealed the secret of what his mom does to him. He feels he should still be protecting her because that's still his mom.

The Fault in Our Stars

The main character in the story Hazel has cancer and her parents believe that she depressed because she never goes out side and when she is doing something it usually involves her thinking about dying. Her mother wants her to live her life as a normal teenage girl would, hang out with friends, go to parties, and dates but she has no interest in doing any of these things. However, her mom still decides that she should be doing something productive with her time so she tells her doctor about her concerns and he refers Hazel into a group with other cancer patients, they join every week and do the same thing each time, introduce themselves, tell the stories of living with cancer. Hazel has only one real person that she actually communicates with, even though she wouldn't consider him a real friend outside of that place, Issac. It wasn't until a guy name Augustus Waters shows up that Hazel finally finds someone she feels is worth talking to.

Freedom Writers

This book is sort of different from others, its a collection of diaries between former students that attended the low-perfoming school, Wilson High School, in Long Beach, California. The teacher, Erin Gruwell was a first year English teacher and she was stuck with the worst of the worst student that attended Wilson. They were freshmans in Highschool that were reading at third grade levels and also didn't couldn't care less about the cirrculum that was forced upon them. These students had no respect their teacher and they the kids thought she was another teacher that they could run out the door in a month or two, however she was different. Once the students began to see that their English teacher really did want to help them, they began to open to her and actaully enjoyed coming to her classs, many even confessed that this was their favorite class and if it wasn't for that class they probably wouldn't even bother going to school.

Drama High: The Fight #2

Things are only getting worse as Jade starts school, the people two people that she was once so close to is no longer around. In fact, there is rumors going around that her former bestfriend Misty  now wants to fight her.  She really has no one to talk to at this point, although she does have some people that she commuincate with a little, its nothing like having that one person that you could go to for anything. But she won't let that stop her from her over-achieving way in school. She's always been an A student, something that her grandmother taught her and something she's also very proud of.
