"Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, was my favorite piece of writing that we read in class this semester. I love how Hemingway created a story from mostly dialouge. I know it must of been exteremly difficult to pull that off. But anyways, enough complementing, lets talk about what the story was about,
Being pregnant is a blessing isn't it? Well it all depends on the timing I guess. Jig and a man with no name found out that they were having a baby. Throughout the entire story the man is basically Jig to get an abortion in a very settle, very calm way. He tries to make it seem like it is just naming all of the options but it's very clear that he is leaning toward abortion. He brings up the fact that they would no longer be able to do all of the things that they would normally do, like trying new drinks and going to hotel and doing whatever it is that they do there. He still wants to be a free ma, not have to worry about a child, basically hes selfish.
Jig on the other hand wanted to keep her baby, whenever this mysterious man gives her a reason to get rid of it she throws a response back as to why she wants to keep it. This was very hard to read. Its always hard when someone is telling you to do the opposite of what to do and I know its especially hard if the topic is killing your baby. After all its something that can never be undone, even if you were to have another child the thought will still remain in the back of your mind.
Ultimatley, in the end she decided to side with the man and says that she will get an abortion even though you can tell at she doesn't want to. She lies and says shes fine but I think deep down inside no women is "fine" with getting an abortion
